- Harold Levine
- Would-be world traveler (OK, Europe-centric), I've been accused of enjoying the homework almost as much as the trip: learning the language, reading the books, renting the movies, polling the friends for advice, trolling the museum websites and dreaming about the food. My ultimate goal: seeing all the Vermeers in the world "in situ:" of the 36 (ish), I'm at 29. I travel in the footsteps of Jan Morris, Marcel Proust, Henry James and John Singer Sargent.

- "Massimo, unless you intend to hold Mr. Squirmy on your lap for an hour-long boat trip, I suggest you unfold that thing and put him back into it." (Italian wife to her husband, who had just carefully folded up the stroller.)
- "1 euro for the bathroom! I'm going to have to piss much worse than I do now before I pay 80 pence to use the loo!" (One British teen to another outside the public toilet in Burano.)
- "Honey, which one was Torcello? The one with the glass?" "No honey, that was Murano. Torcello was the one where you lost your camera case." (Australian couple, right next to me here at the Internet shoestore.)
- "Mom, you're WRONG! The Romans have the beards; the Barbarians have the long hair!" (French 10-year-old boy to his mother at the "Rome and the Barbarians" show.
- "Honey, I think our little Presbyterian church is going to look pretty sad after this." (American couple, in San Giorgio Maggiore)

Harold & Annie, Thank you for the best laugh I had all day yesterday. The text message made me roar with laughter.
I'm so enjoying your blog, and imagining the images makes my mind happy--can't wait for the real thing. My jealousy is appeased only by the fact that it is the prettiest, mildest time of year here, with blue skies, pale green baby leaves, bright yellow tulips, sweet pink blossoms turning trees into cotton candy, and 70+ degrees...It's a "softness of air issue" here. Enjoy my friends, and someday I'll be there. Love, Suz
